The Alzheimer’s Association’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s events are annual fundraising walks and activities to raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer research. There are more than 600 communities nationwide that participate making this the world’s largest event raising awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support, and research. Participants are encouraged to register for their local walk, fundraise by donating and spreading the word, and of course, walking on walk day. This year in particular presented some special challenges due to COVID-19. There was no possibility of having the typical large gatherings during the walk days as people were encouraged to social distance in order to flatten the curve of the virus. Instead of holding large gatherings per walk as usual, the association invited people to walk in small teams of friends and family while still spreading awareness to the best of their abilities. Team B had the opportunity of working with Barbara Monteith who was in charge of multiple walks in VA as well as Katie Bittinger who was in charge of the Howard County, MD walk.
Description of the work requested
Team B worked with Barbara specifically in preparation for her Williamsburg, VA walk which was held on October 24th, 2020. We also helped Katie in preparation for her Howard County, MD walk which was held on September 26th, 2020. The main request/largest area of focus for both Barbara and Katie was generating interest for their respective walks. They emphasized that our team is essentially taking the lead on how to accomplish that goal. With that being said, Team B focused on expanding social media outreach, sharing personal Alzheimer’s stories to increase participation, educating and spreading awareness, and finally highlighting groups that are disproportionately affected by Alzheimers.
