Purpose: The primary purposes of the persuasive essay are to take a stand on an issue, to suggest solutions to a problem, to persuade with facts (as opposed to opinion), and to consider multiple perspectives. Topic: For reasons to be discussed in class, the topics of abortion, gun control and legalization of marijuana are off-limits. There are no other restrictions for this essay. Students who are struggling to identify a topic should reach out to the instructor for ideas. Formatting Requirements: 750 word minimum; double-spaced, Times New-Roman, size 12 font, APA style. Essay 2 should be e-mailed by the end of Week 4 (Sunday at midnight) Structure Requirements: Each persuasive essay must include the following information. 1. Introduction. Your opening paragraph(s) should include (1) an interesting hook that inspires the reader to learn more, (2) a thesis sentence that presents a clear and concise statement of the primary argument, and (3) background information that provides both context to the argument and details for an audience unfamiliar with the topic. 2. Body paragraph 1: This paragraph (or paragraphs) should include a minimum of two examples of supporting evidence in favor of your thesis topic. Supporting evidence is fact-based with clear logic that appeals to your reader’s values. 3. Body Paragraph 2: This paragraph (or paragraphs) is the most critical part of the essay. This is where you must consider and analyze one or two major objections of the topic. This analysis should question and provide facts pertaining to the objection, concede some truth to the objection, and offer compromises. 4. Body Paragraph 3: This is your final opportunity to convince your audience and should include a new piece of supporting evidence. 5. Conclusion: This is where you insert your opinion on the topic. Your closing paragraph(s) can end in any of the following ways: (1) provide a glimpse forward, (2) end with a dramatic statistic or starting truth, and (3) share an anecdote that provides a strong visual image or a simple reaffirmation of your thesis statement. *This paper does not necessarily need to have a works cited page. However, if you quote any sources or reference any articles, books, and/or websites, these references must be cited within the text and an APA-formatted works cited page at the end of the paper.*
