You will now examine the areas of bias and cultural competency—and be able to differentiate the two, and see how they are related. To begin, go to the Background Reading and read the 10-page Understanding Bias: A Resource Guide. Pay particular attention to Implicit and explicit bias and cultural competency. Then you will take an Implicit Association Test (IAT). Go to and click “Take a Test.” Then choose from the left (e.g., Arab-Muslim IAT). Follow the directions. Answer the following in 2 to 3 pages:

Explain the differences between bias and cultural competency.

After taking the IAT, what have you learned about yourself? Be specific.
