Thesis Indigo Dyes Color Ultraviolet Violets Interpretive – Not just a statement of fact or opinion but analysis that digs deeper. Bad Example 1: King Kong is a story about a giant ape kidnapping a woman. Bad Example 2: King Kong is a scary movie. Good Example: The horror of King Kong is rooted in the fear of miscegenation—the film is deeply concerned with upholding the ever blurring color line by the intervention of White men to save Anne Darrow, a White woman, from the clutches of Kong, a metaphoric Black man. Defensible – There is evidence one can adduce to support the thesis. Bad Example: King Kong is about the shift from the gold standard to fiat currency OR King Kong is a metaphor for the early years of the Reconquista. Good Example: Using the above Good Example for the Interpretive section, one can easily cite examples of stereotypes of the nature/civilization dyad being linked to the White/Black binary, scientific racism that purported Black people were genetically closer to apes than White people, the tropes of Black people being unable to control themselves around White women, the display of King Kong in chains is very similar to a slave auction, etc. Controversial – People need to be able to disagree with this thesis. Bad Example: In King Kong, Denham shows sympathy for the giant ape. This is extremely obvious in the film. Good Example: The film King Kong, ultimately, blames Anne Darrow, a White woman, for the temptation of Kong, a symbolic Black man, through Denham’s final line: “It was Beauty killed the Beast.” Unique – This thesis is original, creative, and inventive. Bad Example: Any of the examples I have given/any of the arguments your classmates are making. Be yourself! Add your own flair! Good Example: King Kong, through its cinematography—specifically with the use of shot/countershot– makes the audience complicit with the fetishization of a woman in danger and feminizes the audience by forcing us to be in her perspective, creating a genderbending sadomasochistic experience for the audience that blurs the boundary amongst audience, film, actor, and camera. Valuable – This thesis adds something of worth to the conversation. Bad Example: King Kong deploys racist and sexist tropes. This is true, and easily proven, but so what? It is extremely easy to point out how flawed the movie is. What does this add to the conversation? Good Example: King Kong deploys racist and sexist tropes toward an anti-sexist and anti-racist agenda, thus leaving the film in an ambiguous position and asking an uncomfortable question: can ironic sexism/racism ever become sincere critique, or is it doomed to forever repeat the very tropes it seeks to disrupt. This furthers the conversation and offers potential solutions. 2. List Claims that support Thesis 3. Conclusion 4. Lead into Body 1 PART 2: BODY 1. Intro 2. Claim 3. Context for Evidence 4.
