Write an exploratory essay in which you take the reader on a journey in which you explore an issue or problem. We will be exploring the problems of the negative, unintended consequences of fast fashion or discarded electronic waste (choose one). Rather than state a thesis or a claim, you will state a question about the problem. You will work your way through sources highlighting different viewpoints. When you cite the sources you have considered, be sure to use attributive tags so that the reader can distinguish between your own ideas and those of the sources you have summarized.
Note: an exploratory essay is used to investigate an issue, not to take sides or to persuade. Therefore, you should remain as objective as possible until you present your conclusion on the issue at the end of the paper.
You must synthesize four sources on your issue. Two of the sources must be academic sources. The other two can be credible popular sources. The purpose of this paper is to show how different writers discuss and provide evidence for their viewpoints on a highly debated subject. You also need to think about each writer’s reasons and assumptions in the debate. Analyze your sources for bias, logical fallacies, credibility, etc.
In sum, this paper’s purpose is to inform the reader about the different sides/issues of a debate by identifying major points by each author and creating a balanced presentation about the issue.
Since this is not an argument-based assignment, your introduction will not state and defend a thesis. Rather, you will establish the rhetorical context of the issue and explain its importance, but you will not present an opinion. Similarly, your conclusion will not re-state a thesis. Instead, your summation will create a path for further exploration of your research question. Out of your four sources, two must be academic. Two can be from a website/newspaper/film/magazine. The others will be academic sources from MC’s library databases.
This is not a persuasive essay. You must do more than summarize sources—advanced critical thought is required.

- Introduction (15 points): Describes the problem, why it is worth pursuing, why it is problematic, why you, as the investigator, are interested in it; in other words, it hooks the reader.
- Content and Development (40 points):
-Considers alternative views and plays them off against each other.
-Offers new, relevant input and responds to it thoughtfully. For your audience, you need to summarize and explain the new input (from a book, article, interview) and then analyze and evaluate it, playing the believing and doubting game and exploring how this new input affects your thinking. Repeats this process several times.
-Integrates source material into essay correctly and effectively so that all borrowed facts, ideas, and words are documented and quotes are not left hanging. (Draws from three relevant sources)

Rhetorical Analysis of Jamele Hill
“it’s time for black athletes to leave white college”
College sports are popular in the United States, especially basketball and football. Today we all know how much college athletes are helping their school to grow financially and popularly. Jamele Hill American sports journalist on ESPN wrote an article calls, “it’s time for black athletes to leave white college” published in September 2019 in The Atlantic Magazine. Jamele Hill argues that “white universities” are using top black college athletes for profit. She insists that by choosing an masse to only go to historically black colleges and universities, black athletes could disrupt the reign of an amateur sports system that uses the labor of black athletes to make white people rich… Jamele Hill’s article on “it’s time for black athletes to leave white college” she effectively used ethos, Logos, and ethos because she used credible facts and reputable sources, convicting facts and statistics, and employing emotional appeals.
In her article, she used many strong sources that strengthen her credibility and appeal to ethos. She argued that, “In the early 1990s, five high-school basketball players—two each from Texas and Detroit, and one from Chicago—got to know one another playing in all-star games and basketball camps. They enrolled together at the University of Michigan, and partway through their first season, they were all starting for the team. Becoming famous as the Fab Five, they reached the championship game of the March Madness tournament in 1992 and 1993, and four of them went on to play in the NBA. What if instead of enrolling at Michigan they’d gone to Howard, taking the Bison, rather than the Wolverines, to the Final Four?”(quoted in Hill) She cited this source as a credible source to boost her reputation by showing that those students could have joined HBCU, so they can be served as a model for other black students.
Throughout the ethos, Jamele Hill added some logos to defend his idea, with a logical fact. She claimed that “Bringing elite athletic talent back to black colleges would have potent downstream effects. It would boost HBCU revenues and endowments; stimulate the economy of the black communities in which many of these schools are embedded; amplify the power of black coaches, who are often excluded from prominent positions at predominantly white institutions; and bring the benefits of black labor back to black people.”( Hill) She also mentions big celebrities name such as Beyonce, LeBron James, Nipsey Hussle and Jay Z to make her argument strong. The logos strategy used in this paragraph is to make her article more credible and considerable by the audience.
In addition, she also presented some convincing fact and statistics to make her argument more valuable. She clarified that “The NCAA reported $1.1 billion in revenue for its 2017 fiscal year. Most of that money comes from the Division I men’s-basketball tournament. In2016, the NCAA extended its television agreement with CBS Sports and Turner Broadcasting through 2032—an $8.8 billion deal. About 30 Division schools each bring in at least $100 million in athletic revenue every year. Almost all these schools are majority white—in fact, black men make up only 2.4 percent of the total undergraduate population of the 65 schools in the so-called Power Five athletic conferences. Yet black men make up 55percent of the football players in those conferences, and 56 percent of basketball players.” (Hill) These statistics are logically support her claim that is a real issued. She used statistics to build an appeal to logos and to convince the reader that this problem is important to be discuss.
Along with others appeal, Jamele Hill strongly appeals to pathos in the article to support her idea. She talked with Robert Buck who attended two black colleges (Alabama and FAMU), and she claim that “It bothered Buck that other black athletes were generating such money for predominantly white schools, and that other black communities weren’t receiving the same benefits.” (Hill) The goal of using pathos in the article was to make people who read the article to feel emotionally sad. So, they can make a good decision in the future.
Inconclusion, Jamele Hill started her article “It’s time for black athletes to leave white college” by productively persuading her readers with credible facts and reputable sources, convicting facts and statistics, and employing emotional appeals. She wants black college athletes to self-segregate, because she thinks it would benefit HBCUs and all-black schools.
