my paper is about the first commemorates and college students in the confederate flag. I want my paper to be about systemic racism and how students have use their voice to improve situations.

If you really care about something you will show effort. Has been a simple heat, white power, intimidation, and never being able to live up to the standards of white Americans. My paper is not coming from a racist one of view but a justified point of view. I’ve had the next step, and much worse. Although times have gotten better they have not met the standard. The confederate flag still resides in certain parts of the country that Black people help build thanks to technology of today we are able to see turn on black men and women gun down by the police unfairly. These wrongful acts committed by police officers had led to protests, looting, chaos and not just by black people but people from all walks of life. College students in particular I’ve made a tremendous impact on fighting injustices done in this country. The confederate flag and other racist memorabilia only empowers racism and hatred.. With the help of God, high ranking members of society, black student unions, and are brothers and sisters from other races; colleges in the south with a racist foundation have stepped in the light. The confederate flag has been removed from colleges and states altogether, leaders of the south and confederate army have had their names taken off buildings. One day we will be able to peacefully exist in harmony if we continue down the path of justice.
College Students and the Confederate Flag
If you really care about something you will show effort. Allow me to be the first person to say the year 2020 has not been all bad. Even though we are in a global pandemic and racial tension are higher than they have been since the beating of Rodney King; an unarmed African American man the light at the end of the tunnel is visible. A lot of major college campuses have done away with old statues and the confederate flag. The removing of these items is a sign of better days ahead; this is something that should have been done a while back. Out of respect for African Americans the confederate flag should not be displayed in public. The removal of a couple of the flag did not come easy; a lot of college students are really upset with the flags removal. Intense debates and protests have sparked throughout the country particularly in the South and Mid West.
As an African-American I have no choice but to acknowledge this country‘s history. I love being American, but there are a few things that I strongly dislike. The N-word (hard R or when used by another race) and the confederate flag Strikes anger in the heart of african-American people can I see the flag it says slavery. The confederate flag is a manifestation of the N-word.
“ In 1860-61, eleven southern states seceded from the United States to protect the institution of slavery, forming the Confederate States of America and precipitating the Civil War. During the war, the Confederacy and its military forces used a variety of flags, but the flag that became most associated with the Confederacy was the so-called “battle flag.”(Lipstadt, 2020)
Slavery is the most heinous act committed in American history. All the northern states were attempting to do away with slavery in the southern states we’re going against it. They fart under the confederate flag so when I see the confederate flag automatically sync you wish slavery was not abolished. Not only was it used as the symbol of slavery back in our country beginning; racist White nationalist groups have adopted it as well. The confederate flag is a symbol for white power. In the past racism was mainly associated with the south in the Midwest; no it is managed to show its ugly head as far west as California. Just in the city of Long Beach, one of the most well-known cities in all of California; A kkk rally was held downtown in the city of Long Beach and a black man happened to killed that day
Family members and supporters have maintained that Taft’s murder was racially motivated; witnesses said a White man was seen running from the restroom after the shooting. Others said they saw a racist slur scrawled across a table that was near the reunion at the time, (Rivera, 2020)
not only is the confederate flag a symbol of hatred and racism; it empowers the racist people to act. When these racist groups step out and commit heinous crimes and protest inequality and racism we look to the confederate flag for justification. The confederate flag is warping the minds of the racist people. There is American game goes by the name of the Nazi low riders. America is the land of the free and the home of the brave. Last time I checked the Nazi’s were a group that hated all except blonde hair and blue eyes. Not only is it stupid and racist but it is extremely hypocritical to call yourself an American and a Nazi. Some people argue that the flag represents history and is a look towards the future.
“Flag supporters today are expressing resentment against African Americans and “concessions” granted to them as well as opposition to what they see as destabilizing social, cultural, and economic trends that have cost them status in the social hierarchy and put them at a relative disadvantage for the future.”( Foster, 2018)
People who support the flag today miss benefits of supporting the flag. Social status, economic status and cultural relevancy were all heightened on this flag flu it’s proudest. White Americans who support the confederate flag tend to be on the lower end of the economic spectrum and are often less educated. It seems to me like all the confederate flag supporters want to do is make America great again.
This has been one of the most trying years of my life; not only am I an asthmatic but I am also a black man. Being attacked on the inside and the outside. Well I’m trying to stay away and be careful because I am a high risk if I were to get Covid, George Floyd was brutally murdered. He was suffocated by multiple police officers in his last breath he called for his mother. George Floyd murder was racially motivated.
“ based on FBI investigations and open sources, warned, for example, that skinhead groups were actively encouraging their members to become “ghost skins” within law enforcement agencies, a term the report said white supremacists use to describe members who “avoid overt displays of their beliefs to blend into society and covertly advance white supremacist causes.”(Schulkin, 2020)
This is some of the most frightening news that I’ve come across. Are used to think that a lot of these police shootings were due to a lack of firearm training as well as situational training. Now I know no matter how much training; no matter how much work is put in there will be racist police officer who’s job to protect and serve as secondary to their duty as a white supremacist. The murder of George Floyd happened be right before the riots took place. But it was not just the murder of George Floyd but the countless killing of unarmed black men; Rayshard Brooks, Daniel Brooks, Breyonna Taylor, Atatina Jefferson, Stephon Clark; these are just a few of the unarmed victims of police brutality. The deaths of these people cause a massive uproar by the black community as well as the Latino and White community. The protests started off in the United States and grew to a global scale. Countries such as the UK, Australia and France all saw protest for the Black Lives Matter movement.
College students across the US were protesting and demanding a change. “For more than a century, a Confederate monument has towered over the heart of the University of Mississippi, a stark reminder of divisions that have endured long past the Civil War.” (Svrluga, 2020), For years students of color had to stare at the statues and and look at the names of confederate leaders names on buildings that are anti-their skin color. Some students decided step out and use their God-given voice spark a change in their communities and beyond. Mississippi is arguably one of the most racist states in America. The state flag has the confederate flag in it. With all the police brutality and injustice being done to African-American citizens they were often look to the government for help. In several attempts to change why for them they were often reminded by the confederate flag that they are and will forever be lower class citizens. What’s done in the dark will always come to the light thanks to the technology police brutality was now starting to be seen. More and more unarmed Black people were making the news because of obsessive force by an officer of the law. The innocent murder of George Floyd was the preverbal straw that broke the camels back. Protests were larger than I’ve ever been more and more people are speaking out.
What made the difference this time is that the voices involved were so loud and numerous that they could finally not be ignored. First, a multiracial gathering of thousands of Black Lives Matter protesters converged on the state capitol, in early June, to protest police violence against African-Americans. They chanted “Change the flag,” as well as the names of those killed by police violence. (Eubanks, 2020)
The pieces to the social justice puzzle are finally starting to come together. It did not stop there as a matter fact this is just the beginning. There’s nothing quite like college football in the south. The Southeastern conference is the most popular as well as the most challenging conference in the country. Within this conference you have some of the most popular athletes.
They knelt on campuses and outside courthouses and a capitol. They filmed videos and challenged coaches and gripped megaphones to call out racism they knew from their classrooms and stadiums. They led protest chants, registered voters and started to strategize for Nov. 3, Election Day. In some instances, the nation’s college athletes even pledged not to play. (Blinder and Witz, 2020)
The best thing about these protest was that it was white athletes who had an impact on the Black Lives Matter movement as well. These athletes have hundreds of thousands of social media followers and they use their platform to influence the generation below them. In cities like Tuscaloosa and Auburn their football program makes up a huge portion of their economy. When star players threaten to hold out because of this countries the injustices done in this country The people in charge had no choice but to listen.
Like anything worth fighting for it comes with pushback and controversy. Even though the flag and other Confederate monuments are seen as hateful and insensitive to people of color others just simply do not care. “ According to the Supreme Court, student speech is protected under the First Amendment, though not as much as adult speech. ‘Speech’ can include expressive conduct, like flying a flag or wearing a flag on clothing.” (McLellan, 2018) As an American there certain things you were born with and amendments are one of them. The people who chose to support the confederate flag claim they are exercising their First Amendment right. The supporters of the flag argue that wearing the flag, tattooing the flag, and having the flag in on your truck or inside your home is a form of protest. It is a known fact that the first amendment protects all citizens freedom of speech. “Categories of speech that are given lesser or no protection by the First Amendment (and therefore may be restricted) include obscenity, fraud, child pornography, speech integral to illegal conduct, speech that incites imminent lawless action,” (Rosguill, 2020) The confederate flag is a form of intimidation and has the power to incite chaos. Organizations such as schools, chops, parks do not have to allow hate speech on their premises. The confederate flag represents two time periods; a time when America’s economy was back by the work of slaves and they look towards the future where white power is supreme.
To end all racism is a very tall order because individuals have hearts of stone but I believe in God and He has no limitations. In the mean time I will support the positive movements that are taking place in this country. The Black Lives Matter movement is not a trampoline for African-Americans to leap over the other races. Black Lives Matter movement should be looked at as a ladder to equal opportunity and justice. I find a lot of researching information on this paper I realize why God gave us voice. If we want something done we must exercise our first amendment right. Yes, one vote, one voice does not really matter; but a mass of votes a mass of voices who have an ever lasting impact. I’m not racist I love everyone equally; I may not like the actions of certain individuals even people of color but that does not give me the right to treat them less than a human.
