The turn of the millennium brought its share of threatening economic, social, and
ecological challenges. Nevertheless, business school teaching cases continue to be
almost exclusively focused on ‘best practices’ or difficult decisions at otherwise wellmanaged
organizations. More typical examples of organizational incompetence, let
alone scandalous business practices, are virtually not found. For example, in spite of the
enormous relevance of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 to management and
organization challenges, as well as the evidence of organizational politicking and
incompetence, few if any teaching cases have examined the events or outcome of 9/11.
Because organizations are open systems, they represent complex challenges that
require sensitivity to the uniqueness of the situation and to frequently competing
interests and perspectives. We propose that manager training should foster good
conversations in business settings that help managers be aware of the moral and ethical
dimensions of their decisions and actions. Such conversations should help
organizational members to surface the complexity and ethical dimensions of competing
interests, as well as the dilemmas and doubts of their own activities.
Whereas most teaching cases focus on managers and tend to be oblivious to other
groups or ways of ‘seeing’ the problem, Darkside cases acknowledge the diversity of
actors and interests. Darkside cases allow for the development of judgement, the ability
to synthesize, integrate, and balance short-term and long-term effects, as well as to
appreciate the effect on different groups. Darkside cases are also a chance to give voice
