Effective teachers know their students, know their content areas, and know how to engage students in learning. What has worked for you to influence student engagement in your classroom? As you gain a better understanding of your students’ needs, provide an example of how you have modified your approach to classroom management, based on how the students respond. The one area in which I believe has influenced my students’ engagement in my classroom is that I began my teaching off by building relationships with the students. This helped to build a foundation of a good relationship, which led to respect. That would be the first thing that helped me to influence student engagement. In the first month, we did virtual learning, but I was still consistent with my lessons so the students can become familiar with me when we do come back in person. For me, that was our foundation for a good relationship. Likewise, that was the first thing that helped me to influence student engagement when we began school in person on September 28, 2020 with our first tier I group of kids. In October we got our second ground of tier II students to come in school for in person education. The next element will be that I am a very active person; therefore, I can see my classroom goes from sitting still to being active. For the middle school students we incorporated a play board, where when they are finished they can pick on of the choices such as coloring, reading, playing on the computer or ipad, and making stories. As well as giving students break time to go outside for mask break, and walk around. For the younger grades, in my students in elementary age I like to do the Go noodle, they love that find it a great break for students during work. Adding a physical activity requires the students to move a bit. Furthermore when reading students a read aloud of butterfly, students can also listen to a cute song about butterflies, and a butterfly dance. The can also color or design their own butterfly picture. “Students who are not appropriately challenged may get bored, or they may get frustrated and ultimately become disengaged” (Henninger & Richardson, 2016). Students can only be engaged in material that they can access and understand. Many times our students struggle to stay engaged, simply because they do not understand the material or the lesson. For example, I can have a lesson that is interesting and engaging, but if I picked out readings that are too difficult for my students or material that is too jam-packed, it becomes overwhelming. And once a student is overwhelmed, they are not going to engage with the content. So if I want to engage my students, the first thing I must do is to know my students and their abilities.
