Think of this question as a short essay, with an introduction, body and a conclusion.
Question: Critically discuss the role of media and popular culture in shaping US democratic politics. In thinking about media, focus specifically on media ownership and the crisis of journalism.

Comprehension and Application (30)
Knowledge and understanding of course material. Application of theoretical and empirical information
Critical Analysis and originality (50)
Collating, organizing and assessing information; Identifying relevant debates; Clarity; Originality or Critical Reflection; Coherence and synthesis.
Writing/Structure ( 20)
Structure of the essay; Writing style (e.g., style, expression); Grammar/Spelling; Use of Sources/Referencing & in-text citations (appropriate style). Intro and conclusion.
Instructions 1. Citation: You can use the citation style you are used to, either Chicago, APA, and others
etc. The citation rule for referencing scholars, Chicago style: Author’s Last name, year of publication. (Crick,2003). If you are using quotes (Crick, 2003: page number).
2. References at the end of the document, look up the style you are used to. It is a good idea to include correct citation of the scholars you have relied on in the last question. There is not a requirement to use a specific number.
3. Generally, it is better to reference scholars you have learned about in the Lectures and not to quote lecture slides. You can paraphrase lectures but try to use scholars that the lecture slides illuminate. Lecture slide citation: (Last Name, First Name. “Presentation title.” Lecture, Date). If you cite scholars (McChesney, 215), you do not need to cite the lecture slides.
4. It is a good idea not to use very long quotes, instead paraphrase scholar’s key ideas in your own words. You only need a bibliography or reference page for the last question.
5. Plagiarism: Turnitin is active for this assignment. The aim of Midterm assignment is to show your independent knowledge, comprehension and critical skills of the course material. If you work with other students on your midterm, please make sure that you use different examples and that your answers are used in your own words. It is considered plagiarism if answers are very similar. Also, self-plagiarism from other course submission will also be highlighted by Turnitin.
