Part I – Critical Analysis (48%)
Your text discusses the three components of evidence-based practice. The three components of evidence-based practice are best research evidence, clinical expertise, and patient needs and values (Grove & Gray, 2019, Fig. 1.1). The best research evidence is the empirical knowledge generated from the synthesis of quality health studies to address a clinical problem. Clinical knowledge gained through experience is also valuable but should be combined with evidence, knowledge of theories, and patient needs to guide practice. Nursing research is a scientific process that validates and refines existing knowledge and generates new knowledge that directly and indirectly influences nursing practice.
Consider the following patient situation and the possible conflicts among the evidence, clinical expertise, and patient needs and values. Answer the following questions based on the case study.
Mrs. Greenwood, age 62 years, was diagnosed 5 years ago with hypertension. Her body mass index (BMI) is 33.8 (weight, 185 lb; height, 62 inches). Her blood pressure readings at the physician’s office range from 220/104 to 176/92 mmHg despite treatment with valsartan–hydrochlorothiazide (Diovan-HCT 160/25). The RN who works with the physician has taught the patient about modifiable risk factors and set short-term goals with the patient at each clinic visit for the past 6 months, but Mrs. Greenwood has not lost any weight. She acknowledges that she continues to drink a couple of beers a day and smoke a pack of cigarettes each day.
Part II – Recognition (12%)
The levels of research evidence are a continuum, with the highest quality of research evidence at the top of the pyramid and the weakest research evidence at its base (Grove & Gray, 2019, Fig. 1.3). Systematic research reviews and meta-analyses of quality experimental studies provide the best research evidence for practice. Evidence-based guidelines are rigorous, explicit clinical guidelines that have been developed based on the best research evidence available in that area.

Part III – Evidence Search (30%)
EBP involves the use of the best research evidence to support clinical decisions in practice. Locate a piece of evidence on appropriate coping strategies for burnout prevention from a healthcare organization, professional organization, educational organization, or advocacy group web resource (no journal articles: web documents only!) and:
1. Type the title of the item you located and analyze and explain whether the information presented in the document is supported by references and/or scholarly sources and whether the information seems valid and current.
