Workplace Violence in Nursing
The role of healthcare providers, particularly nurses, is critical in the healthcare setting. The healthcare workers deal with the patients as well as their attendants. Workplace violence in nursing impacts the performance of nurses and other healthcare professionals. Workplace violence in nursing involves both physical and verbal abuse. This topic has been selected because workplace violence in nursing is common in almost every healthcare center around the globe. The patients and their attendants are usually in distress and might become hyper over minor issues. So, they start abusing the healthcare providers, especially nurses. It is important to explore and investigate this topic to ensure quality healthcare delivery.
Workplace violence in nursing is associated with decreased quality of healthcare services. It impacts the physical, mental, and psychological health of the healthcare providers. The healthcare providers get frustrated due to the physical and verbal abuse by the patients and their attendants. Consequently, they are not willing to provide healthcare services to those patients. Also, the professional skills and abilities of the healthcare providers are impacted negatively because of the harsh attitude and behavior of the patients and their families. Physical and verbal violence from the visitors and the patients has been reported in different healthcare settings around the globe. For instance, 18.3 % and 37.1 % of nurses, working in the healthcare center in Amman (Jordan), have experienced physical and verbal abuse respectively in six months. Similarly, 42 % of nurses experience physical violence while 72 % experienced verbal abuse in a year in Swiss hospitals. Also, 60.8 % of nurses in Turkey reported that they have experienced physical and verbal violence from the visitors, patients, and their families. The nurse who is exposed to violence observes serious health issues like depression, stress, sleep disorders, palpitations, hearing damage, sprain, pain, and fear of patients. So, it is important to figure out the causes of violence and to develop appropriate strategies to overcome these challenges.
Nurses and healthcare providers should be given fair remuneration and training to overcome these challenges (Bordignon & Monteiro, 2016). Bordigong and Monteiro (2016) have suggested several solutions to the issue of workplace violence in nursing. The hospital management should provide appropriate pieces of equipment, materials, and structure, increase the number of professionals, improve the work conditions, adopt safety measures to ensure a safe work environment. I believe that these suggestions could be helpful to resolve these issues. A safe working environment is essential to protect the healthcare workers from the violence of the patients and visitors. Similarly, it would also ensure that the workers feel safe, thus they would be better able to provide the healthcare services to the patients. Increasing the number of healthcare professionals reduces the workload on the nurses. It helps to avoid extra stress. So, the suggestions given by Bordignon and Monteiro (2016) are appropriate for reducing workplace violence in nursing.
I believe that the administration of the healthcare center should develop a conflict resolution committee that deals with the issues among the workers, nurses, patients, and their families. I have observed that the patients or the visitors abuse the healthcare professionals only when there exists a conflict. I believe that if the conflicts among the nurses and the patients are resolved appropriately, the patients would not abuse the nurses and other healthcare providers. This solution is appropriate to the existing problem because it would assure that the conflicts are resolved immediately and adequately by the conflict resolution committee. The healthcare providers would also be satisfied mentally because they would have an opportunity to present their case. Hence, there should be a conflict resolution committee in each healthcare center.
