Reflect upon the various groups that we have covered over the entire course. Now that you have more detail for each group and you have been participating in self reflection along the way, which populations would feel most comfortable working with as a case manager? Why? Which groups of people will present the greatest challenge to you? Why? Finally, how you would work to overcome those challenges.
The region where I work is more than a third Hispanic/Latinx, with an undisclosed number being undocumented immigrants or children of undocumented immigrants.
I hold three privileges – my appearance, my fluency in Spanish, and my insight growing up in an immigrant community. I am able to effectively provide services because my privileges build an instant trust among the population – I am allowed to ask sensitive questions (e.g. Are you a U.S. citizen?); I am allowed to view sensitive materials (e.g. May I see your tax returns?); I am allowed to learn about their personal lives (e.g. Are you parents in the U.S.?). I am most comfortable working with people who are Latinx and/or know of the immigrant experience.
The being said, the population that I’m most comfortable with is also the one I have trouble with. It is exhausting to share a side of yourself everyday. It becomes more exhausting when you pour your heart and soul into a matter… only for it not to pan out. Then you’re left wondering “Did I do something wrong?” or “Is there more I could have done?”
It took time but I learned to to give myself limits – not everyone wants to be helped and you can’t do everything for everyone. I taught myself to gauge clients on what they need and what they can handle. By gauging their self-advocacy and their own resources, that’s how I overcome my challenges.
Although I currently work with the Drug & Alcohol population, I feel like the Drug & Alcohol community present the greatest challenge for me. A lot of my clients are not only struggling with addiction, but they also have mental health issues. It is very hard to engage this group sometimes and some of their needs are extreme. There are individuals needing housing, treatment etc. and when there are no resources available due to waiting list, not meeting the requirements, my workload becomes stressful. I have clients who are pregnant, relapsed and struggling with whether they want to go to treatment or not. I work with individuals with dual diagnosis, so I am more comfortable working with this group of people due to the fact that I often know what to expect and how to help them get the services they need, whether it is emergency shelter, clothing, grief counseling, food etc. To overcome the challenges that I face, I research available community resources, I talk to my co-workers to see if they are aware of resources that would be beneficial to my clients, so that I am able to provided them with as much help and resources as possible. I avoid bias and focus on the most important need of each client and work on those needs with them.
